the government goons in los angeles did this. they named the I-105 freeway the "jb anderson" freeway or something like that after a crooked californian politician. and everybody hates the name.

but nobody in los angeles calls it by that name. everybody call it the century freeway because the freeway replaces century blvd as the entry to los angeles international airport.

private lori piestewa is certainly not a hero.

private piestewa was a government cook, not a fighter.

private piestewa's unit got lost in the iraqi desert and they were ambushed and she was killed. she did nothing to merit the status of hero.

dont get me wrong and think im saying private piestewa was a butthole. she wasnt. but she was not a hero either.

Arizona 51 is now Piestewa Freeway

If you drove home Thursday on Arizona 51, you were traveling on the Piestewa Freeway.

The State Transportation Board voted 5-2 earlier in the day to rename the Squaw Peak Freeway to match that of the newly renamed peak.

"It's the right thing to do," said Victor Mendez, head of the Arizona Department of Transportation, who said the change went into effect immediately.

Changing the name of the freeway honors Army Pfc. Lori Piestewa, eliminates the derogatory term of squaw and keeps the name the same as that of the peak, Mendez said. Piestewa, a Hopi, is the first Native American woman killed in combat as an American soldier.

Hopi Chairman Wayne Taylor urged the board to vote for the change, saying there was nothing uplifting or inspiring about the Squaw Peak name.

"Indian women and women in general will benefit," Taylor said. "All who drive the parkway will have a daily reminder of Lori Piestewa's sacrifice."

About 50 people attended the meeting, including Heather Strange, fiancee of Marine Lance Cpl. Michael J. Williams, also killed in Iraq. She asked the board to consider naming the route Williams Memorial Freeway, instead.

Strange said she was glad the peak was renamed for Piestewa but thought all those who died should be honored in some way.

Bill Jeffers, vice chairman of the board, voted against the change, objecting to voting in a special meeting with only two days' notice for the public and raising concerns about pressure put on the State Board on Geographic and Historic Names, which voted to rename the peak last month.

Also voting no was James Martin, saying board rules requirea document from the geographic names board. But board Chairman Ingo Radicke said a verbal request for the change was sufficient.

Jeffers said that he respected the sacrifice Piestewa made but that more time should pass to let emotions subside.

And he said he asked about 40 people in his district, which includes the Hopi and Navajo reservations, about the word "squaw."

"When I suggested that squaw was offensive, I was greeted with laughter," Jeffers said. "People go to ceremonies called squaw dances . . . and it's not by any means intended to be offensive."

But board member S.L. Schorr said "squaw" is defined as offensive in dictionaries and that it was time to get rid of the racial and gender slur.

"I don't need time to think about that," Schorr said. "Waiting might only make things more contentious."

Meanwhile, in Washington, the federal panel that would authorize the renaming of the peak will likely discuss the issue next Thursday.

Robert Hiatt, chairman of the domestic side of the U.S. Board of Geographic Names, said the issue will likely come up, even though no official request has come from Arizona, "because there's been so much controversy about it."

Officially, the federal panel is prohibited from changing the name for five years.

"We hope it will get done much faster than that," said Tim Nelson, Gov. Janet Napolitano's legal counsel. "My understanding is that the federal board gives great deference to the state board."
